Re:Nylon

Prada has always utilized nylon as a main material. The debut of the brand's '84 collection Pocone in its line of bags and accessories won it worldwide acclaim. Miuccia Prada expanded the collection to include nylon dresses for her own label and Linea Rossa, the nylon-heavy collection of a buzzbeast-ready, sexy diffusion that Frank Ocean recently dressed himself in at the Met Gala. The Milan-based powerhouse has transformed its iconic nylon bags into eco-friendly reNylon fabrics. The new collection features six classic styles - a belt bag (pictured) as well as shoulder bags (pictured) and bags for totes (pictured), duffle bag (pictured), and two backpacks - in recycled ECONYL fabrics that are made from recycled plastics and fishing nets.

The repurposed fabric is the result of a collaboration with Aquafil, an Italian textile yarn producer which produces Econyl fabric using regenerated nylon waste, which can be recycled over and over again without losing its quality. It's part a larger initiative to shift from virgin nylon to re:Nylon throughout the entire Prada portfolio by 2021, The Business of Fashion reports. The collection includes six new handbags made of Re:Nylon, a pair ECONYL shoes and boots and a range apparel made of the same fabric.

To celebrate the launch, Prada partnered with National Geographic to produce a series of videos titled "What We Carry" that exposes the cutting-edge technology that goes into creating Re:Nylon bags. The first video is a collaboration between Bonnie Wright, an environmentalist and Harry Potter actress, and National Geographic explorer Asher Jay visiting a carpet recycling plant in Arizona which transforms old nylon into repurposed ECONYL.

The Business of Fashion reports that Prada's decision to re-Nylon is its biggest reduction in virgin nylon yet. It will save 70 000 barrels of crude oil each year. The move will also reduce the carbon emissions of the company by about 57,000 tons. It's the latest sustainability effort from the brand, which just went fur-free on its clothing and accessories, a decision that was applauded by both animal rights activists and environmentalists alike.

Recycled Nylon

Although it's better for the environment than nylon, recycled nylon still has its downsides. It's not biodegradable and can sit in landfills or oceans for decades until it is broken down into smaller particles that could cause harm to wildlife. The fabric also sheds microplastics after washing. It also consumes 50% less energy to produce as compared to regular nylon and is more durable than other bags such as wool or cotton.

The fabric is made of a combination of waste plastic and petroleum that is made by burning fossil fuels. This means that it doesn't require for more natural resources as well as the carbon emissions resulting from the production of virgin nylon. It is also more manageable than other bag materials because it doesn't have to be dyed or weaved. This makes it a good option for bags that will be used often like gym and yoga gear.

Recycled nylon is stronger and more flexible than polyester or cotton that are both traditional fabrics. It's also able to withstand a lot of abuse, which makes it perfect for backpacks and other outdoor gear. It is also extremely light and can be easily formed and stitched into the desired shape of bags. Nylon is also a great choice for outdoor gear as it is water resistant and doesn't take in odors or mildew as easily as other fabrics.

If you are looking for a bag that is sustainable be sure to look for the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification. This certification is a test for chemical residues as also social and environmental responsibility. This certification is a great indication of brands that are honest and accountable.

Patagonia is a good example. It has a variety of backpacks and yoga gear made from recycled nylon, also known as Econyl. This nylon is created using a closed-loop method that uses 50 percent less energy than virgin nylon. In addition, the brand is a partner with organisations that work to protect the environment.
